Biography

My name is Marieke McBean (nee Smegen). I was born in The Netherlands in 1980, but I've lived in Scotland since 2001. Just before moving to Scotland I received my first degree in Journalism from the Dutch Hogeschool Windesheim in Zwolle. After that I did a Masters in Journalism at Napier University, Edinburgh. Here I gained my title MSc (Masters in Science).

Between 2002 and 2003 I worked full-time for news agency Newsflash in Edinburgh. As a feature writer for woman's magazines and national newspapers I published in media such as That's Life, Take a Break, The Daily Record, The Sun, The Times, The Herald and The Scotsman.

As a freelance journalist I have published in magazines such as Ajuus! (NL), Whisky Passion (NL), So British & Irish! (NL), NewFolkSounds (NL), Tring! (NL), The Scots Magazine (GB), Scottish Memories (GB) and Scotland Magazine (GB).

In 2004 I received an NC in Photography and Digital Imaging and in 2006 I received an HND in Photography and Digital Media. Both degrees are from Edinburgh's Telford College. I take photographs to accompany the articles I write, and also photograph weddings, events and outdoor sports.

I married my husband Ewan in May 2006 and together we've built a house on the shores of Loch Tay in the Central Highlands. A Dutch article and photographs about the building of our house can be found on the journalism page. We now have two children, toddler Calum and baby Rhona, and together we enjoy the peaceful and magnificent countryside that Perthshire has to offer.

I do a lot of photography work in the Aberfeldy area. Examples can be found in the sports section on the photography portfolio page.

Apart from working in the media industry, I enjoy playing music. You can find out more about my band Rallion at www.rallion.co.uk or listen to my music on www.myspace.com/mariekemcbean.
